Directions: Watch the video on freedom quilts, and then complete the activity.
Yesterday you read about Harriet Tubman, a famous American abolitionist and political activist during the 1800s. One way slaves communicated was through patterned quilts that displayed secret messages. Today you will be making your own Freedom Quilts out of paper.
Freedom Quilts:
There is much written about the use of quilts during the Underground Railroad days. Known as the Freedom Quilt patterns, these quilts were displayed as signals to slaves that they should begin to pack for the journey (Wagon Wheel symbol), dress up (Shoofly) and get ready to escape (Tumbling Blocks). Quilts were also used to alert fugitive slaves to food (Bear's Paw), the way north (Star) and danger (Log Cabin). Because quilts were such an American tradition, they could be hung on porches or displayed on fences without attracting attention. It was also a great way to communicate since many slaves did not know how to read.
Activity:
Use the freedom quilt template to help create your own secret message quilt. You must have at least four patterns. (See example). Attach a picture of your work to submit.

Due:
This activity is to be completed over a two-day period (Thursday & Friday). Attach a picture of your final project to submit. You can also take the weekend to complete, if necessary. Due Tuesday morning, 8am.
You have a choice of three Holy Rosary Projects. Choose one.
1.) Giant Pool-Noodle Rosary:
(This one must be done with an adult supervision**)
Supplies Needed:
2 Pool Noodles of different colors. (One for the “Hail Mary” beads, and one for the “Our Fathers”. Using a third color for the cross is optional). I used 1 pool noodle that was flower shaped, and one that was not.
Clothes line (or any small rope)
Scissors
Bread knife (or other serrated knife)
Glue Gun
First, take the pool noodle that you selected for the Hail Mary’s and slice it into thin beads. You will need 53 total. Now you’re ready to start stringing! String 10 small beads, 1 large bead, 10 small beads, 1 large bead, 10 small beads, 1 large bead, 10 small beads, 1 large bead, and then 10 more small beads. Next, string on one Our Father, 3 Hail Mary’s, and one more Our Father.
Now it’s time to make the cross. Start with 2 pieces of pool noodle, one the length you want your cross to be, and the other slightly shorter. The final product should look something like this (see attached). For more details, visit: https://www.catholicicing.com/make-a-giant-rosary-with-kids/
2.) Make a rosary out of grapes, raisin, and a cookie (See picture). Must contain the correct number of "beads," just like the Pool-Noodle Rosary example.
3.) Make a rosary using a string and beads.
There are 6 “Our Father” beads and 53 “Hail Mary” beads. So that is 59 beads total!
Supplies Needed:
String
Pony Beads (6 Our Father beads, 53 Hail Mary beads, and 6 beads to make the cross OR a plastic cross or crucifix)
If you’re beading your crosses, then also glue dots or hot glue
Yep- that’s it!

Anybody wondering what the future will look like for them? That is totally
understandable. You are not alone. However, it is very important to maintain hope
and to stay focused on getting through the present times while having a vision
for the future, in spite of the coronavirus. We are all here for a purpose and there
is a plan for each of your lives! While things may look different than we ever
thought right now, there's still 💫 HOPE💫 for you in the future!🌟
We just must maintain our faith in the Lord, our God.
In collaboration with Ms. Crichlow and Miss Abi, you will be designing your own vision board. Please click the attachment for further details. Once your vision boards are complete they can be uploaded and
shared in Ms. Abi's art online studio!
