The Barry Upper School: 4th through 8th Grade
The upper school program at School of the Blessed Sacrament (SBS) is designed to meet the challenges that are unique to upper school students. With this in mind, all programming is aligned with the Archdiocese of New York standards and Next Generation Standards which establish clear guidelines as to what students should be able to do in math, English language arts, social studies, science and religion.
At the upper school, we take a hands-on learning approach with a focus on STREAM, which is at the heart of our program: Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, and Math. We provide students with unique learning opportunities that integrate multiple domains, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of all content areas.
As part of our core curriculum studies, students in grades 4 - 6 participate in enrichment classes of art, library, theater arts, physical education, guidance class with a focus on social emotional relationships, computer science, and robotics. Grades 7 & 8 participate in computer science, physical education, and guidance class weekly. They also participate in two days of elective choices which include creative writing, sports, performing arts, songwriting and music production, robotics, video game design, art studio, and sculpture. Latin is the language for all students at the upper school taking place twice a week.
Working with students to develop their independence through strategic projects, collaborations, and partnerships provides our students with a unique and comprehensive SBS upper school experience which prepares students for what lies ahead in high school and beyond.
